Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has issued a clear rallying cry ahead of their crucial Championship clash with Stoke City this weekend: start fast or risk falling further behind in the playoff race. The Red Dragons, sitting seventh and just four points off the top six with four games left, are entering must-win territory.
Parkinson's emphasis on a strong start comes from a concerning trend; Wrexham have conceded the first goal in each of their last five league outings, a habit they cannot afford against any opponent, let alone one with Stoke's pedigree. "We've got to make sure that we're ready to get Stoke right on the back foot from minute one," Parkinson stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The matchup presents a fascinating contrast in recent form. While Wrexham are fighting for their playoff lives, Stoke arrive at the STōK Cae Ras on a dismal run of five consecutive away defeats in the league. The Potters, once promotion contenders themselves, have slid down the table after a strong start to the campaign.
Parkinson and his assistant Steve Parkin left nothing to chance, scouting Stoke in person during their 1-1 draw with Blackburn last weekend. The manager believes his side is prepared for a similar challenge to the one they faced in a narrow 1-0 loss to Stoke back in October. "We know what they're all about," Parkinson said, acknowledging the fine margins in the Championship. "The teams which maintain consistency are the ones in and around the top six." For Wrexham, that consistency must begin with the first whistle on Saturday.
