Wrexham's dream of reaching the Premier League is over, for this season anyway. The Welsh club owned by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac missed out on a place in the playoffs in the second-tier Championship after drawing 2-2 with Middlesbrough in a dramatic final round of the regular season on Saturday. The winning goal for Hull, by Oli McBurnie in the 67th, appeared to be scored from an offside position but there are no video reviews in the English Football League.

For Wrexham AFC, the dream of reaching the Premier League will have to wait at least another season. The Welsh club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, saw their remarkable run of promotions come to a halt on Saturday after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough in the final round of the Championship regular season.

The result meant Wrexham missed out on a playoff spot by the narrowest of margins. Hull City, playing simultaneously, leapfrogged them into sixth place—the fourth and final playoff position—with a 2-1 victory over Norwich City. The decisive goal, scored by Oli McBurnie in the 67th minute, appeared to come from an offside position, but without video review in the English Football League, the call stood.

This ends an unprecedented three-season streak of promotions for Wrexham, which began with their escape from the fifth tier in 2022-23. While the Hollywood-backed fairy tale pauses here, the foundation remains strong for another push next season.

In other promotion news, Ipswich Town secured an immediate return to the Premier League by claiming the second automatic promotion spot behind champions Coventry City. The Tractor Boys sealed the deal with a commanding 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. Owned by U.S. investment group Gamechanger 20 Limited and counting pop star Ed Sheeran as a minority shareholder, Ipswich now prepares for top-flight football once again.
