Iraq's World Cup squad just got a major boost. FIFA has approved the eligibility of two new players for the national team, just in time for the tournament. Nashville SC midfielder Ahmed Qasem and Dundee United defender Dario Naamo are now cleared to represent Iraq, thanks to family ties that meet FIFA's strict rules for changing national eligibility.
This is huge news for a team that hasn't seen World Cup action in 40 years. Iraq punched their ticket back in March, overcoming significant travel challenges amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. Now, they're preparing for a daunting group stage featuring France, Norway, and Senegal—teams loaded with superstar forwards like Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Sadio Mané.
Head coach Graham Arnold, who led Australia at the 2022 World Cup, now has two more European-trained talents to work with. Qasem, 22, was born in Sweden and represented the country up through the U-21 level before joining Nashville SC from Swedish club Elfsborg last year. Naamo, 20, was born in Finland and was still playing for their U-21 team as recently as March.
Both players bring fresh energy and international experience to a squad that's already making history. With the World Cup on the horizon, Iraq's depth just got a little deeper—and their chances a little brighter.
