World Cup 2026 squad deadlines: Key dates, team lists, final announcements

From squad submission deadlines to player replacements, Al Jazeera breaks down the key information for the tournament.

With just under five weeks until the FIFA World Cup kicks off across North America, the excitement is building for fans eager to see which stars will make their national team's final squad. The expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, promises plenty of drama even before a ball is kicked.

Here's what you need to know about the key dates and squad rules leading up to the big event, which opens on June 11 when Mexico faces South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Preliminary Squad Deadline: May 11
All 48 participating nations must submit a preliminary list by May 11. This "longlist" must include a minimum of 35 players and a maximum of 55, with at least four goalkeepers. Teams can also name up to 75 support staff, including coaches, doctors, and team managers.

This provisional list serves as the official pool of eligible players for the tournament. Importantly, any injury replacement before the World Cup must come from this list, making it a crucial strategic document for managers.

Injury Concerns Already Shaping Squads
Injuries have already forced some big names out, including Brazil's Rodrygo and Eder Militao. Meanwhile, Egyptian superstar Mo Salah and Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal are both racing against time to recover from hamstring injuries, though they are expected to be fit for the World Cup.

FIFA has confirmed the provisional release list is for internal use only and will not be published. However, changes can still be made in exceptional circumstances right up until the final squad submission.

Club Release Dates: May 25
Clubs must release their players for national team duty by May 25, following the last official club match on May 24. This begins the official rest, mandatory release, and preparation period for the World Cup.

There are exceptions for players involved in late-season finals. Those competing in the UEFA Champions League final (May 30), UEFA Conference League final (May 28), or CONCACAF Champions Cup final (May 30) may join their national teams later, subject to FIFA approval.

As the countdown continues, every announcement and injury update will shape the narratives of what promises to be a historic World Cup. Stay tuned for the final squad reveals, where legends will be made and dreams will either be realized or shattered.
