Indiana State University is getting a major upgrade to its home court experience, thanks to a generous $1 million gift from longtime supporters Troy and Melissa Woodruff. The university's board of trustees has officially approved naming the new premium hospitality space the Woodruff Sycamore Loft at Hulman Center, a move that promises to elevate the game-day atmosphere for Sycamores fans.
This isn't just about adding some fancy seats. The project will also fund significant renovations to both the men's and women's basketball locker rooms, giving student-athletes a refreshed space to prepare for battle. Construction is set to break ground this month, with the goal of having everything ready by early November—just in time for the upcoming season.
So, what exactly is the Woodruff Sycamore Loft? Picture six private loge boxes on the south side of the arena, each offering a prime view of the court. These aren't your average bleacher seats—each box can host up to 12 guests, creating an intimate setting for groups to enjoy the game in style. For Indiana State Athletics, this means new opportunities to engage fans and generate revenue to support their student-athletes.
Troy Woodruff, a proud Indiana State graduate and current member of the university's board of trustees, shared what makes this gift so personal. "I feel very blessed to be in a position to do something like this. The Hulman Center is an iconic arena," he said during the trustee meeting, where he abstained from voting. He and Melissa even attended their first concert at Hulman Center, adding, "This is a place that has a lot of meaning to us—and a lot of meaning for many other alumni and Wabash Valley residents." His hope? That these improvements enhance the fan experience "and we fill that place up for our Sycamores this year."
The Woodruffs are no strangers to giving back. Their philanthropic footprint includes the Benny E. Woodruff Cancer Research Lab and the RQAW classroom within the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology, showing a deep commitment to both academic and athletic initiatives at Indiana State.
ISU President Mike Godard summed it up perfectly: "The Woodruff Sycamore Loft will create an outstanding experience for our fans, and the locker room renovations will provide meaningful upgrades for our student-athletes. These projects strengthen Hulman Center as a central part of campus life and reflect the momentum we are building at Indiana State."
Nathan Christensen, the university's director of athletics, also expressed gratitude, thanking the Woodruffs "for their incredible generosity and unwavering belief in our student-athletes."
For fans eager to lock in a premium experience, the loge boxes will be available on a season-long basis. It's a win-win: a better view for fans, a better locker room for players, and a brighter future for Sycamores basketball.
