Fresh off a thrilling Sweet 16 run this March, the Minnesota Gophers women's basketball program is already building for another deep tournament push. The team has secured a major backcourt addition, landing high-scoring transfer guard Leah Harmon.
Harmon, a dynamic 5-foot-6 point guard from Patterson, N.J., brings proven offensive firepower to Minneapolis. In her sophomore season at Central Florida, she averaged an impressive 15.6 points per game and shot 38% from three-point range before her year was cut short by injury. Her scoring ability was on full display last January when she dropped a career-high 38 points against Kansas.
With two years of eligibility remaining, Harmon is poised to become a primary playmaker for head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. She joins a talented and deep guard rotation featuring Mara Braun, Grace Grocholski, and Tori McKinney, bolstering a perimeter attack that will be crucial in the competitive Big Ten.
This backcourt strength allows the Gophers to focus their remaining recruiting efforts on reinforcing the frontcourt. Minnesota must replace the production of graduated centers Sophie Hart and Finau Tonga, who combined for roughly 15 points and 10 rebounds per game last season. With two scholarships still available, finding interior scoring will be a key priority as the team looks to build on last season's 22-9 record.
Harmon's commitment signals that the Gophers are reloading, not rebuilding. Adding a player of her caliber through the transfer portal demonstrates the program's momentum and ambition following their successful tournament run.
