Golf is often a battle against the course, but sometimes the fiercest opponent is the weather. The Indian Hills Community College women's golf team proved their championship mettle this week, conquering blustery winds to claim their second consecutive tournament victory of the season.
Competing at the Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa for the William Penn Statesmen Shootout, the 10th-ranked Warriors posted a team score of 329. Their 12-stroke victory over Upper Iowa was a testament to mental toughness and strategic play in challenging conditions that tested the entire field.
"We struggled just like everyone else struggled with the conditions," said head coach Micheal Shedd. "We just kept our heads on, hit the ball in safe spots, and made some big putts. That definitely made the difference for us."
The victory was powered by a pair of standout individual performances. Sophomores Mackenzie Reeves and Jade Blakeley each fired impressive rounds of 78 (+8), finishing just one stroke behind the individual medalist. Reeves electrified her round with a late charge, nearly chipping in for eagle on the 18th hole to briefly take the lead.
Blakeley's round was a career-best, capped by a birdie on her final hole. The transfer from Southern Indiana has found her stride, building on a strong finish last week. "My mental game is what carried me," Blakeley noted. "My decision-making and how I carried myself on the course is what brought my score down."
This win marks a successful return to Oskaloosa, where the program won its first-ever tournament nearly 19 months ago. With four players finishing in the top ten of the 33-player field, the Warriors are building serious momentum. As Reeves put it, "We expect to win every time we compete."
The team will look to continue its winning ways next week at the Stampede at the Creek, a two-day tournament in Elkhorn, Nebraska.
