Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff heralded Kimi Antonelli’s emergence on Saturday after the Italian teen stunned rivals with a dazzling lap to capture pole position for Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix."That first lap, it was really special," Wolff said.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff couldn't hide his excitement after Kimi Antonelli delivered a stunning performance to secure pole position for Sunday's Miami Grand Prix, etching his name alongside legends Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher in the Formula 1 record books.

The 19-year-old Italian sensation, now the youngest championship leader in F1 history, left rivals in awe with a blistering first lap in Q3—clocking 1 minute 27.798 seconds—to jump four-tenths of a second clear of the field. That single lap was enough to claim pole without needing a second run.

"That first lap was really special," Wolff said. "He was three-tenths or more ahead of the next car... then we saw a bit of over-confidence and pushing too hard, but that's just who he is."

Wolff, who has guided Antonelli's meteoric rise from junior prodigy to front-runner, acknowledged the Italian's youth but emphasized his growing maturity. "In the past, he might have ended up in the wall. Now it's just a missed lap. He's showing his speed, and that's great to see. Trusting in Kimi can make you look like a fool or look great. Our junior programme does diligent work—you can see his trajectory, the pace, the speed. It just needed development, which we gave him last year when he made his mistakes. Now, there's more to come, and he has both speed and character."

Antonelli's third consecutive pole position places him in elite company—a feat previously achieved only by multiple world champions Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. When asked about joining such iconic names, the curly-haired teen smiled modestly. "It's very nice," he said, quickly shifting focus to the challenge of driving in the intense Miami heat. "It was very hot, and the track was slippery. It's not easy to put the sectors together, but I'm happy with the lap—and I feel there's more on the table."

Looking ahead to race day, Antonelli warned that forecasted severe rainstorms in Florida could make conditions extremely tricky. "If it rains, it'll be very slippery," he cautioned, keeping his focus firmly on the unpredictable challenge ahead.
