The Washington Wizards have been on a long, painful rebuild—half a decade without a playoff appearance and no postseason series win since 2017. But the tide is finally turning. With veteran stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis already on the roster, the Wizards just landed the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, setting the stage for a bright new era.
Yet, the fan reaction is far from unanimous. While some are celebrating the franchise's first top pick since selecting John Wall in 2010, others are more cautious—even skeptical.
"Man, imagine being the #1 pick in the 2026 Draft and the team that selects you is the Wizards. I'd be so bummed," one fan posted, reflecting the lingering doubts about the team's direction.
But there's plenty of excitement too. "I'm so happy for y’all, best outcome in the draft in so long," another fan cheered, while a local sports fan highlighted the DMV's recent winning streak: "What a time to be a DC Sports fan—Wizards have No. 1 pick, Commanders host the 2027 NFL Draft, Spirit has the highest-paid player in the NWSL, Defenders tied for first in the UFL, Mystics just drafted six rookies."
Not everyone is convinced, though. "The Washington Wizards didn't deserve the first pick in the NBA draft, but here we are," one critic grumbled.
It's easy to get caught up in the hype. The Wizards will have their choice of elite prospects like AJ Dybantsa, Darius Acuff, Cameron Boozer, or Caleb Wilson. But a single draft pick—even at No. 1—doesn't guarantee a championship. The real challenge lies in building chemistry between Trae Young and Anthony Davis while developing young talents like Alex Sarr.
Still, after more than a decade without a top pick, Wizards fans have every right to dream. The pieces are finally coming together—and for the first time in years, Washington has real reason to believe.
