Windermere Prep boys basketball coach Brian Hoff had a hunch that he might be seeing something special when Brandon Bass Jr. first walked into the Lakers gymnasium. Bass was a fourth grader ready to bounce the ball on the first day of an Orlando Basketball Academy summer camp. “I still remember that,” Hoff said last week. “He was one of my first campers. Long arms. Big smile on his face. You ...

Sometimes, a coach just knows. For Windermere Prep's Brian Hoff, that moment came over a decade ago when a long-limbed, smiling fourth grader named Brandon Bass Jr. walked into his summer camp gym. That first impression of raw potential has now blossomed into a historic high school career, culminating in Bass being named the Orlando Sentinel Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season.

The son of former NBA forward Brandon Bass, the younger Bass has carved out his own legendary path at Windermere Prep. The 6-foot-5 left-handed guard put together a dominant senior campaign, averaging a school-record 26.6 points per game to go with 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists. He led the Lakers to a 22-7 record and a No. 7 state ranking in a fiercely competitive Class 4A.

His season was a masterclass in scoring, kicking off with a 42-point outburst against Oviedo and culminating with a new single-season school record of 770 points. For his career, Bass amassed 2,573 points, placing him sixth on the Orlando area's all-time scoring list—in the rarefied air of names like Darius Washington and Austin Rivers. He also leaves as the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made (353) and rebounds (680).

Already committed to Florida State University, Bass represents the next wave of elite talent. Reflecting on his journey, Bass admits his confidence didn't fully click until around eighth grade, even joking about his early days just being "taller than other kids." But for Coach Hoff, who watched that potential unfold from day one, the conclusion is simple: "He's the best to ever come through our school." It's a story of growth, dedication, and a promise fulfilled, setting the stage for an exciting future in Tallahassee.
