The buildup to Toluca's decisive Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal second leg against LAFC has taken an unexpected turn, with star duo Alexis Vega and Jesús Gallardo caught in a tug-of-war between club and country.
Both players trained with Toluca on May 5, just one day before the crucial match. However, their availability for the second leg hangs in the balance due to a scheduling conflict with Mexico's national team camp, which officially opens on May 6.
The situation stems from an agreement between Liga MX club owners, the Mexican federation, and national team manager Javier Aguirre. Under this arrangement, players were to be released before the Liguilla—Liga MX's playoffs—given several days off, and then report to national team camp on May 6. This timeline puts Vega and Gallardo's participation in the Champions Cup clash in serious doubt.
Interestingly, the veteran pair missed Toluca's 1-0 first-leg loss to Pachuca in their Liguilla quarterfinal series. But they were back on the training pitch as the team prepares for what could be a historic continental showdown.
Toluca manager Antonio Mohamed and club officials have consistently emphasized that international competition takes priority this season, especially after securing back-to-back Liga MX titles. With Toluca trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Los Angeles, the team needs a win to reach the final—making Vega's creative attacking flair and Gallardo's aggressive runs from left back even more critical.
However, the landscape shifted dramatically when other Liga MX club owners protested the potential last-minute release. Then came the hammer blow from Aguirre himself. Speaking to reporters at Mexico's Centro de Alto Rendimiento, the national team boss laid down an unequivocal ultimatum: anyone missing the first day of camp will be left out of the World Cup squad.
"All of the selected players are scheduled to be eating all together at 8 at night," Aguirre stated firmly. "As you'll know, the release is very clear. Whoever doesn't come will be out of the World Cup. It's something that we can't be flexible on."
With World Cup qualifying now in the rearview mirror, national teams worldwide are sharpening their focus on soccer's grandest stage. For Vega and Gallardo, the choice between a Champions Cup semifinal and a World Cup spot is no choice at all—but for Toluca fans hoping to see their stars in red and white one more time, the waiting game continues.
