The Knoxville Smokies and Birmingham Barons have another game to play in Friday's doubleheader. Here's what happened in Game 1 at Covenant Health Park.

The Knoxville Smokies took control early and never looked back, cruising to an 8-1 victory over the Birmingham Barons in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader at Covenant Health Park. With the win, the Smokies extended their series lead, but the Barons still have a chance to bounce back in the second game.

Friday's twin bill was scheduled to make up for Wednesday's rainout, with the first game starting at 5 p.m. and the second set to begin about 40 minutes after the first ended—both seven-inning contests.

The Smokies broke the ice in the bottom of the third inning, when shortstop Jefferson Rojas drew a walk to bring home Ethan Hearn and give Knoxville a 1-0 lead. It was just the beginning of what would become a breakout performance.

The fourth inning turned into a nightmare for Birmingham's pitching staff. A wild pitch allowed Owen Ayers to score, and then the Smokies' patient approach at the plate paid off in a big way. Devin Ortiz worked a bases-loaded walk to score Edgar Alvarez, and two more bases-loaded walks followed, pushing the lead to 5-0. Ayers then delivered the knockout blow with a three-RBI triple, stretching the advantage to 8-0 and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The Smokies' offense was relentless, capitalizing on wild pitches and free passes to build an insurmountable lead. Birmingham managed just one run in response, unable to solve Knoxville's pitching staff.

With Game 2 on deck, the Barons will look to regroup and even the doubleheader, while the Smokies aim to keep their momentum rolling. For fans of minor league baseball, this series is a reminder that every pitch and every at-bat can shift the momentum in a hurry—much like the unpredictable nature of the game itself.
