The Minnesota Wild's injury woes continued Wednesday night as defenseman Zach Bogosian was sidelined for Game 5 against the Colorado Avalanche due to a lower-body injury. This latest setback adds to an already depleted Wild roster that's facing elimination in the first-round playoff series.
Bogosian joins key teammates Joel Eriksson Ek and Jonas Brodin on the sidelines, both of whom have yet to suit up in the series because of lower-body issues. The timing couldn't be worse for Minnesota, which is fighting to keep its postseason hopes alive. There was a small glimmer of hope, however, as Wild coach John Hynes confirmed that Eriksson Ek skated back in Minnesota earlier Wednesday—a positive sign for a team desperate for reinforcements.
Stepping into Bogosian's spot on the blue line is veteran defenseman Jeff Petry, who will be counted on to steady a defense corps that's been stretched thin throughout the series.
On the other side, the Avalanche aren't at full strength either. Colorado entered Game 5 without forward Artturi Lehkonen and defenseman Sam Malinski, both of whom missed Game 4 with upper-body injuries. Still, the Avs have found their rhythm, and head coach Jared Bednar is sticking with the hot hand in net.
Mackenzie Blackwood got the start for Colorado after a sharp 19-save performance in Monday's 5-2 win, which evened the series. Blackwood took over for Scott Wedgewood in Game 3 and hasn't looked back.
"Go with the hot goalie for a while," Bednar said after morning skate. "If they struggle at all, we go to the next guy. The next guy's done an amazing job of keeping himself ready, getting the work that he needs on and off the ice, mentally putting themselves in a good spot to be ready to come help us win a hockey game."
With both teams banged up and the stakes at their highest, Game 5 promised to be a battle of depth and resilience—qualities that define the best playoff hockey.
