In a heart-wrenching incident that has rallied a Texas community, the wife of a beloved high school track coach is providing an update on his recovery after a freak accident at a state meet.
Leslie Crutsinger took to social media on Wednesday to share encouraging news about her husband, Blake Crutsinger, an assistant track and football coach at Ponder High School. The coach suffered a skull fracture and brain swelling on Saturday, May 2, when he was struck by a 12-pound shot put during the Region II-3A UIL competition at Whitehouse High School, near Tyler.
"There was no CT scan last night," Leslie wrote in her Facebook update. "The EEG was complete and read, and it only shows general slowing, which is normal for a head injury, but doesn't show seizure activity. GREAT NEWS! He looks good, and the face and eye swelling on his left side have gone down."
Blake's journey to recovery continues with an MRI scheduled for Wednesday, pending a reduction in his swelling. Medical staff are working toward gradually "waking him up" and eventually removing his breathing tube, a critical step in his healing process.
The incident has sparked an outpouring of support from the Ponder community and beyond. The school district, located about 60 miles northwest of Dallas, urged everyone to "lift up Coach Crutsinger and his family in your thoughts and prayers."
In her initial update over the weekend, Leslie showed remarkable grace by asking for compassion toward the young athlete who inadvertently threw the shot put that struck her husband. Her message reminds us of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of community in times of crisis.
As Blake continues his fight, the sports world stands united in support, hoping for a full recovery for this dedicated coach who has given so much to his athletes on and off the field.
