In a harrowing update from a Tyler, Texas hospital, Leslie Crutsinger has shared the latest on her husband Blake Crutsinger's recovery after a freak accident at a high school track meet. Blake, an assistant track and football coach, was struck in the head by a 12-pound shot put during the Region II-3A UIL competition on Saturday, May 2. Now in the intensive care unit, his journey to recovery has taken unexpected turns.
Five days post-accident, Leslie revealed that Blake is not yet awake, and doctors are managing new complications. "His tests yesterday show signs of pneumonia starting in one lung," she wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7. "They are starting treatment with antibiotics and additional breathing treatments." But that wasn't the only challenge: "They found blood clots in his legs. Normal procedure would be anticoagulant, but due to his brain injury, they can't do that." It's a delicate balancing act for the medical team.
There is a glimmer of progress, however. Medical staff are adjusting medications to gradually wake Blake, and the results are promising. "The change in meds is working—he is moving his extremities and opening his eyes without being stimulated!" Leslie shared. "The surgeon was pleasantly surprised. Tonight, he's moving his left arm and leg a lot, though still not much on his right side, especially his right arm. His vitals have been good all day, and his fever is down."
An MRI taken early Thursday morning showed slight ischemia in the affected area, but overall, the signs are cautiously optimistic. For the Crutsinger family—including their two children—every small movement and eye opening marks a victory. As the sports community rallies around them, this story serves as a powerful reminder of the risks athletes and coaches face, even in the most routine moments of competition. We're all hoping for Blake's full recovery and sending strength to the entire Crutsinger family during this trying time.
