Tennessee basketball has secured a major defensive piece for its frontcourt, officially adding Loyola (Chicago) transfer center Miles Rubin to the roster. Standing at 6-foot-10, Rubin arrives with a reputation as a formidable rim protector, a skill set that has Vols head coach Rick Barnes excited about the fit.
"He is an incredibly tough and hard-working player who loves to be a star in his role," Barnes said in a statement. "Miles is an ideal fit in our defensive scheme as a sensational rim protector who can also defend one-on-one in the post and guard on the perimeter."
Rubin's defensive credentials are impressive. During his three seasons with the Ramblers, he averaged 2.3 blocks per game and was a two-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive team. His arrival in Knoxville is timely, as he's poised to fill the void left by defensive anchor Felix Okpara, who exhausted his eligibility.
But Rubin isn't just a defensive specialist. Barnes also highlighted his offensive potential, noting his abilities as a lob threat, his touch around the basket, and his passing skills. This well-rounded game suggests he can be a seamless two-way contributor for the Vols.
Rubin's commitment, announced alongside fellow Chicago native Dai Dai Ames, bolsters a Tennessee frontcourt that also features promising freshman DeWayne Brown II. As the Vols continue to reshape their roster following several transfers, the addition of a proven, defensive-minded big man like Miles Rubin provides a solid foundation for the team's identity moving forward.
