Why struggling Clemson baseball had major problems in loss vs USC Upstate

USC Upstate took control early and went on to a 6-3 win May 12 against Clemson at Fifth Third Park in Spartanburg.

It was supposed to be a chance to reset. A midweek matchup against an in-state mid-major, the kind of game that can help a struggling team find its footing. Instead, for Clemson baseball, it was another step in the wrong direction.

Head coach Erik Bakich knew the danger. He never viewed Tuesday's game at USC Upstate as a soft spot on the schedule—not for a Clemson squad sitting in last place in the ACC. "I know they are a 'mid-major,' but we don’t see them that way," Bakich said after the 6-3 loss at Fifth Third Park in Spartanburg. "They just kicked our butts."

And from the second inning on, they did just that. USC Upstate seized control early and never let go, handing Clemson a defeat that felt all too familiar for a team desperate for a feel-good moment. The Tigers couldn’t generate the kind of momentum that might spark a turnaround, falling behind and never fully recovering.

For a program built on tradition and high expectations, the loss underscores just how far Clemson has fallen this season. A midweek game that should have been a chance to build confidence turned into another lesson in frustration. The Tigers will need to dig deep if they hope to salvage anything from a season that keeps slipping away.
