The Colorado Rockies find themselves in familiar territory this season—far from postseason contention. While that's no shock to anyone following the team, it does create a golden opportunity: the chance to sell high on a player whose value has never been higher.
That player is Mickey Moniak, the former No. 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia Phillies, who is enjoying a true breakout season in the Mile High City. According to Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter, now is the perfect time for the Rockies to trade Moniak and maximize their return.
"For a Rockies team going nowhere, selling high with a year and a half of control remaining is the best way to maximize his value," Reuter notes.
Sure, the Rockies could hold onto Moniak and build around him. But here's the thing: Moniak's current production is far above his career norms. Through 119 at-bats this season, he's slashing .303 with 11 home runs, an NL-leading .655 slugging percentage, and a 1.004 OPS. For context, his career OPS entering this season was just .724. That's a massive jump—and one that screams regression.
The smart play? Strike while the iron is hot. Moniak still has 1.5 seasons of team control remaining, which gives the Rockies significant leverage in trade talks. An outfield-needy contender could be willing to pay a premium for a player with both current production and future control.
In a season where the Rockies aren't going anywhere, there may not be a more obvious sell-high candidate in all of Major League Baseball. Dealing Moniak now could net the kind of return that accelerates Colorado's rebuild—and that's a move worth making.
