Alabama football fans are on the edge of their seats as head coach Kalen DeBoer keeps the starting quarterback race under wraps—at least for now.

During a recent appearance on ESPN's "Always College Football" podcast, hosted by former Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy, DeBoer was playfully pressed for a hint about who will lead the offense this season. The contenders? Redshirt junior Austin Mack and redshirt freshman Keelon Russell. With a knowing smile, DeBoer simply replied, "I'm not ready. I'm not ready."

While he's keeping the starting nod close to the vest, DeBoer did offer plenty of praise for both signal-callers. Through spring practices and into summer workouts, he's seen real growth from each player. "Both grew," DeBoer said. "Both took advantage of the opportunities given to them. And both have high ceilings."

DeBoer's confidence in the quarterback room extends beyond just this season. He's already looking ahead, noting that the depth and potential at the position bodes well for the program's future—especially come 2026. "I talk about the ceiling for some of these guys. I think it's what's the floor?" DeBoer explained. "Knowing at the very least we're at this point, like it leaves a lot of optimism on what that room's going to be and what it's going to lead to as far as production on the football field each and every Saturday."

For context, Mack has been with DeBoer since his final season at Washington and brings experience with 26 completions on 35 attempts for 267 yards and four total touchdowns over three seasons. Russell, meanwhile, showed flashes as a true freshman in 2025, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama kicks off the 2026 season against East Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. CT on ABC. Until then, the quarterback battle remains one of the most compelling storylines in college football—and a decision that could shape the Tide's entire season.
