Fernando Mendoza is making a big decision—and it's all about putting his NFL future first. The former Indiana Hoosiers star quarterback, now a rookie with the Las Vegas Raiders, has hinted he may skip the White House visit alongside his championship-winning college team.
Mendoza led the Hoosiers to a stunning national championship victory over the Miami Hurricanes this past January. But when Indiana makes its celebratory trip to Washington, D.C., on Monday, May 11, the 22-year-old signal-caller will likely be elsewhere—focusing on his new career.
"If it is on the first day of OTAs, like I said, I’m on the bottom of the totem pole here. I gotta prove myself," Mendoza told reporters over the weekend. "I can’t miss practice."
For a rookie quarterback trying to earn his stripes in the NFL, every rep matters. Mendoza knows that missing even one day of organized team activities could send the wrong message to his coaches and teammates. "As a rookie, I don’t think that’s a good look. I want to try to best serve my teammates and I don't know if that'd be accomplishing that goal," he added.
It's a mature perspective from a player who just months ago was celebrating the highest peak of college football. But Mendoza understands the grind of professional sports doesn't wait for anyone. "Out of all those great milestones, I’m really happy about these past two days because it’s back to football," he said. "Really enjoyed college, the Hoosiers were able to end off on a high point, now it’s back to the bottom of the totem pole."
The transition hasn't been easy. After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Mendoza chose to stay home in South Florida with family instead of attending the draft festivities in Pittsburgh. Now, he's facing the reality of rookie camp. "Yesterday I was like, 'Wow, I have a lot to work on.' Everyone here in rookie camp, these are all really, really good players, so I need to elevate my level of play when we go to OTAs next week and training camp," he admitted.
It's a classic rookie story—balancing past glory with future ambition. While his former teammates enjoy a well-earned trip to the White House, Mendoza will be grinding in Las Vegas, proving he belongs. And for fans who love seeing the next generation of talent rise, that's a story worth following.
