Earl Little Jr. had a decision to make this offseason: declare for the NFL draft or take one more shot at college football. He chose the latter, and his destination—Ohio State—says everything about his ambition.

After a breakout season at Florida State, Little initially declared for the draft in late December. But within days, he had a change of heart. "My heart was telling me to come back to school," Little explained, prioritizing his development to ensure he's "100% ready for the next level."

Entering the transfer portal, the talented safety found a perfect fit in Columbus. The Buckeyes presented a clear opportunity, needing to reload in the secondary after losing star safeties to the NFL, including 2023 Jim Thorpe Award winner Caleb Downs.

For Little, who experienced a 7-17 record over two seasons at Florida State, the chance to join a perennial contender was a major draw. "That was something that I wanted to be a part of," he said.

His decision was bolstered by a strong recommendation from former teammate Caleb Downs, who transferred to Ohio State last year. Downs praised the defensive coaching staff, particularly coordinator Matt Patricia and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri, for their football IQ and teaching ability.

The early returns in Columbus have been promising. Little was one of the first transfers to lose his black stripe in spring practice, a symbolic welcome to the team. By the ninth practice, head coach Ryan Day had already singled him out as one of the most consistent performers, highlighting his communication in the secondary.

But it's more than just technique. The coaching staff has been energized by his presence. Safeties coach Matt Guerrieri noted, "There’s immediate energy when he’s in the building," while co-defensive coordinator Tim Walton simply called him "a fireball."

By betting on himself and choosing Ohio State, Earl Little Jr. isn't just transferring—he's strategically positioning himself for a dominant final chapter and a much stronger leap to the professional ranks.
