In the ever-evolving landscape of college basketball, the role of a general manager has become a hot topic—especially for powerhouse programs like Kentucky. But under head coach Mark Pope, the Wildcats are taking a different approach. Instead of hiring a single GM, Pope has built a four-person "general management team" to handle the Wildcats' recruiting, roster construction, and NIL deals.
In a recent video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Pope explained his philosophy: "In this dynamic environment, everybody is trying a different solution. For us, instead of hiring a singular GM, we've gone with a more comprehensive team approach."
So, who makes up this team? It's a diverse group of specialists. Keegan Brown, the "Director of Roster Management," brings experience from both college and the NBA, focusing on data analysis and roster construction. Nick Robinson handles salary cap strategy and management—a key role in today's NIL-driven world. Kevin Sergent serves as the compliance officer, managing contracts and legal language. And Kim Shelton acts as the JMI liaison, overseeing NIL contracts tied to corporate sponsorships.
While many power-conference programs have embraced the traditional GM model, Pope's decision to spread responsibilities among four experts shows he's committed to doing things his own way. It's a fresh take on team building that keeps Kentucky at the forefront of innovation in college hoops.
For Big Blue Nation, this approach means a deeper focus on every aspect of the program—from data-driven decisions to legal compliance. And for fans, it's a reminder that even in a sport that's constantly changing, the Wildcats are finding new ways to stay competitive.
