Why did Valkyries trade Flau'Jae Johnson? GM won't say for now

Well, consider us confused.

The Golden State Valkyries made one of the most head-scratching moves of the 2026 WNBA Draft on Monday night. After selecting LSU star guard Flau'Jae Johnson with the 12th overall pick in the first round, they promptly traded her to the Seattle Storm at the start of the second round.

In return, the Valkyries acquired forward Marta Suárez and a 2028 second-round draft pick. This sequence has left fans and analysts utterly perplexed, raising a fundamental question: if Suárez was the target all along, why not simply draft her with their original first-round selection?

This kind of draft-and-immediate-trade maneuver is rare in the modern era, especially for a player of Johnson's caliber. The move essentially swapped a top rookie for a player drafted later and a future asset that won't materialize for two more seasons, a puzzling calculus for a franchise that has otherwise built a strong foundation since entering the league.

When pressed for an explanation, Valkyries General Manager Ohemaa Nyanin offered little clarity, opting for a diplomatic pause. "I'm going to take a beat to be able to eloquently give a response," Nyanin stated. "I don't have a lot of detail to share. One, because I'm exhausted. Two, because I want to be very thoughtful when I'm talking about other humans and their basketball abilities and how they would or would not show up for our squad."

Her response only deepens the mystery. The core questions remain unanswered: Did the Valkyries' evaluation of team fit change immediately after the pick? Was there a strategic draft board miscalculation? For now, the Valkyries' front office is keeping its cards close to the vest, leaving the basketball world to speculate on the logic behind this stunning draft-night pivot.
