Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks have added some serious size to their roster. The program officially signed Christian Reeves, a 7-foot-2, 255-pound center transferring from Charleston, marking the third addition from the transfer portal this offseason.
Reeves joins Utah forward Keanu Dawes and Toledo guard Leroy Blyden Jr. as key portal pickups, but he's not the only newcomer making waves. The Jayhawks are also welcoming a star-studded freshman class, headlined by 247Sports' No. 1 overall prospect, Tyran Stokes. With this mix of experienced transfers and elite young talent, Kansas is building a roster built for a deep run.
So, what does Self see in Reeves? It's all about untapped potential. "I think that Christian will have an immediate impact for us," Self said in a release. "He really didn't have an opportunity to play a ton until College of Charleston, and what was so impressive is he averaged over 11 points and eight rebounds a game with a hurt shoulder all season long." Self added, "It's exciting because he's dealt with so many injuries, and for the first time in his college career, we can see the potential because it's the first time he's really been able to play."
Reeves proved his durability and skill this past season, starting 18 of 31 games and averaging 21.4 minutes per game. His stat line is hard to ignore: 11.1 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, shooting an efficient 65.4% from the field. While he didn't attempt a single three-pointer, his 60.4% free-throw shooting shows there's room to grow his range.
In the paint, Reeves will battle for minutes alongside returning center Paul Mbiya, who made a name for himself during the Jayhawks' postseason push. Whether one emerges as the starter or they split time at the five, both big men will be crucial as Kansas chases Big 12 and national glory. For a program that prides itself on toughness in the trenches, adding a physical presence like Reeves is a statement of intent.
