Hard to believe May is going to be here on Friday. It’s harder to believe that, this late in the season, I have to ask coaches to do two of the simplest tasks in order for us here at The Providence Journal to continue to shine light on their athletes and the sport.

First, scores need to be reported in a timely fashion. Some programs have been terrific about it. Many others – including some of the state’s elite teams – have not.

The responsibility is on the coach of the home team. If the game is against an out-of-state opponent, it’s on the Rhode Island team to report. Everything is emailed to PJSports@ProvidenceJournal.com. Do not call. No one is at the office.

What we need is rather simple. First, the final score. I’d love a score by quarters, but a halftime score is also helpful. The next thing we need is who scored the goals for both teams and if you want to give us who had assists, we’ll take those. If someone had a game-winner or an important string of goals, let us know. Finally, goalie saves – when applicable.

If you really want an easy, can’t-mess-up-system, reach out to Westerly boys lacrosse. The Bulldogs email us a photo of a stat sheet that is stunningly simple to follow. I’d recommend it to every program in the state.

Please email it as early as possible. I understand there’s a lot going on after games. We’d like it before 9 p.m. If it’s before 10 p.m., we’ll deal. If it’s after 10 p.m., I will tell myself I’ll never cover your team again (even though that’s a lie).

Finally, the only other thing that has to be done – update your rosters on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League website. This week I’ll be auditing every spring roster for every school in every sport. The results of the audit will be out on Instagram next week.

Why do we want this done? Because it helps us do our job. We can’t be at every game in the state, but when given the proper tools, we can write briefs on every game that’s played. Our daily High School Scoreboard page provides more info on games than the old-school print edition ever could. It’s gone from passion product to viable entity in the high school sports media world and we just want it to keep getting better.

So please help. Or I’ll get angry. And nobody wants that.

Let’s get on to the ranks – which I’m just doing statewide going forward.

The Rams are the only team in the state that doesn’t care what its RPI ranking ends up being. That has to be a nightmare for everyone else desperately trying to avoid them as long as possible. La Salle’s three losses are to out-of-state opponents, but it will return to RI play Thursday when it hosts Barrington before hosting Cheshire (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon.

Can May 18 get here already? Until the Quakers play La Salle, it’s hard to tell how they stack up with their rival. MB has slaughtered in-state competition and performed well against elite out-of-state teams. There’s one team the Quakers care about beating – and they’ll meet for the first time on May 18. This week Moses Brown as a non-league game against Milton (Mass.) on Monday and then hosts Sharon (Mass.) on Saturday.

The Eagles continue to show why they’re Rhode Island’s best public school program and kudos for them for not dodging the big dogs in D-I like some of the other state’s top teams. Barrington will be more than ready for Thursday’s game at La Salle, but it can’t lose focus Monday when it hosts Cumberland. If the Eagles want to get to the state final, this week will be great for finding out what they need to do.

Why is the team with the second-most RPI points in RI playing in Division II? If fairness to the Avengers, they lost the D-II final so the onus was on Portsmouth to move up (or, better, the RIIL to make a 10-team D-I, as I proposed last week). Instead of playing for a State Championship, EG will have to settle for the Ninth Place trophy at the end of the season. EG hosts Cranston West on Monday, then hosts Portsmouth Thursday in a game that’s both a rematch of last year’s D-II final and a preview of this year’s.

The Patriots have the fourth-best RPI in all of Rhode Island – better than La Salle’s – and, regardless of what goes down, won’t get to play for a state championship. It’s too bad, because this team is one of the best the program’s had. Portsmouth is still the favorite to reach Brown, but it needs some big performances this week hosting Smithfield Tuesday before traveling to East Greenwich on Thursday.

Pilgrim (6-3, fourth in D-I RPI)It doesn’t matter where they finish, these Patriots will be the best Patriots in the state just because of how they’re performing this season. Pilgrim’s playing tough and having fun, but it’s hitting a stretch of prove-it games that will tell us whether or not this is a future state semifinalist. The one game this week is a big one, playing at Hendricken on Friday night.

Are the Hawks a darkhorse semifinalist in D-I? Hendricken had a solid showing against Moses Brown, toughed one out against South Kingstown next week but now it needs to step on the gas. We’ll find out this week whether or not this is a final four team as Hendricken travels to play North Kingstown on Wednesday night before hosting Pilgrim on Friday.

The Bulldogs are barking and since a close loss to Portsmouth, their only defeat came in a road game against D-I South Kingstown. Westerly has the requisite strengths to battle D-II’s top teams and its offensive prowess certainly makes it dangerous. The Bulldogs need to keep momentum going forward and can do so this week with a game at Prout Tuesday and home Thursday against Middletown.

It’s clear the Huskies are on a mission and the May 7 rematch with Narragansett can’t get here soon enough. Mt. Hope has been devastatingly good this season and outside of a one-goal loss to D-II Westerly and out-of-state defeat to Waterford (Conn.), have faced little resistance. The Huskies have treated every game like it’s a final and expect that to continue with three games this week – at Burrillville Monday, at Coventry Wednesday and on the road against Toll Gate Friday.

Scituate (5-0, first in D-IV RPI)Last week’s column on mid-season realignment was well-received by the lacrosse community, but since it’s way outside the box, here’s a better solution Scituate and the rest of the D-IV teams should demand – play in the D-III playoffs. You can have a 12-team playoff (there’s 13 total teams) with the top four getting byes. It’s so easy. Scituate plays up this week at D-III North Smithfield on Wednesday before hosting Toll Gate on Saturday.
