Who’s the greatest girls basketball player to ever step on a Salem-Keizer court? That’s the debate we’re settling right now, and we want you to cast the deciding vote.

As the nation gears up to celebrate 250 years of American history, USA TODAY Sports is honoring the 250 greatest sports figures of all time. But before we look at the legends, we’re zooming in on the grassroots stars—the high school athletes who built the foundation of our local sports culture.

Earlier this spring, we celebrated the Salem-Keizer area’s top football stars. Now, it’s time to lock in on the hardwood. We’ve narrowed down the list to the top 10 girls basketball players who defined a generation, dominated local headlines, and left an unforgettable mark on the community.

While college and pro success certainly played a role in our picks, we focused on what these athletes did while wearing their high school jerseys—the buzzer-beaters, the championships, the moments that made the stands roar.

Here are the 10 trailblazers (listed alphabetically) who shaped Salem-Keizer girls basketball history.

Brenden made an immediate impact at Silverton, helping the Foxes capture their first state championship in 1989 as a freshman. She followed that up with back-to-back first-team all-state honors in 1990 and 1991, leading Silverton to state runner-up finishes both seasons. By her senior year, she was named Class 3A state player of the year and earned All-American status. At Nebraska, Brenden became a four-year letterwinner and helped the Cornhuskers reach two NCAA Tournaments.

Bunn was a force at Stayton, earning three consecutive conference player of the year awards and back-to-back first-team all-state nods in 2000 and 2001. Her name remains synonymous with excellence in the program’s history.

We invite you to vote in our online poll at statesmanjournal.com/sports. Don’t see your favorite player on the list? Let us know who you think should be included. The conversation starts now.
