Manchester United are reportedly plotting a surprise return for set-piece specialist Andreas Georgson, who could be back at Old Trafford just months after his departure.
The 44-year-old Swedish coach originally joined United in the summer of 2024 as part of Erik ten Hag's revamped technical staff. However, when the Dutchman was sacked just months later, Georgson found himself in an awkward position. While he wasn't immediately shown the door alongside Ten Hag and his core team, new boss Ruben Amorim significantly reduced his role, handing set-piece responsibilities to his own assistant, Carlos Fernandes. Left with little more than an "assist" title, Georgson exited the club at the end of last season.
Since leaving United, Georgson has been on the move again. He reunited with former Brentford colleague Thomas Frank at Tottenham, but that stint proved short-lived. Frank was replaced by Igor Tudor, whose brief and disastrous tenure made way for Roberto De Zerbi. Now, with Spurs undergoing yet another managerial shake-up, Georgson is once again looking for a new home.
According to The Athletic's Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell, the Red Devils are actively searching for a free-kick and set-piece specialist to join Michael Carrick's coaching staff. Speaking on the Stretford Paddock podcast, Whitwell revealed that Georgson remains "highly admired" within the club and is one of the leading candidates for the role.
The timing makes perfect sense. In today's Premier League, set-piece efficiency has become a game-changer—just look at Arsenal's success this season, built largely on their deadly routines from dead-ball situations. With Michael Carrick on the verge of being confirmed as permanent head coach, strengthening his backroom team with a proven specialist like Georgson could give United a crucial edge in the modern game.
For United fans, this potential reunion could signal a smarter, more tactical approach to the fine margins that decide matches. And for Georgson, it would be a chance to finally make his mark at a club where he never truly got the opportunity to shine.
