LSU baseball got back in the win column Tuesday night with a victory over Southeastern Louisiana, but the Tigers are still staring at an uphill climb when it comes to their postseason hopes. After being swept by Mississippi State over the weekend, LSU has now lost three straight SEC series and hasn't won a conference game since April 5. That rough stretch has taken a toll on their RPI, a key metric the NCAA Tournament selection committee uses to build the field.
According to D1Baseball, LSU currently sits at No. 61 in the RPI rankings. While their strength of schedule ranks a solid No. 12 nationally, the Tigers' 25-21 overall record isn't doing them any favors. Digging deeper, LSU is just 4-13 in Quad 1 games—the toughest tier of opponents—and has five Quad 4 losses, which are the kind of blemishes that can really hurt come selection time.
All hope isn't lost, but the margin for error is razor-thin. This weekend, LSU hosts South Carolina in Baton Rouge, and a sweep of the Gamecocks would be a huge step in the right direction. After that, the Tigers close the regular season with tough series against Georgia and Florida. To keep their tournament hopes alive, LSU likely needs to win both of those series—no small task against two of the SEC's top teams.
For fans still holding out hope, every game from here on out is essentially a must-win. The Tigers have the talent to make a run, but they'll need to start stacking wins—and quickly—to get back into the NCAA conversation.
