As the regular season winds down, Louisiana baseball is fighting to secure its spot in the NCAA Tournament—and every game counts more than ever. With just one series left on the schedule, the Ragin' Cajuns (32-20, 14-13 Sun Belt) are making their case for a regional bid, but the road ahead is anything but certain.
After a strong Sun Belt Conference series win against Appalachian State, where they added two more victories to their resume, UL stumbled in a midweek matchup against New Orleans, falling 9-6 in extra innings. That loss took a bite out of their RPI—a key metric used by the NCAA selection committee. Now, the Cajuns are gearing up for their final home series of the 2026 season against No. 20 Coastal Carolina, a crucial opportunity to boost their standing.
As of May 12, UL's RPI sits at No. 49 according to the NCAA's index and No. 48 per D1 Baseball's rankings. The Cajuns have posted a 6-9 record in Quad 1 games, 6-3 in Quad 2 contests, and a combined 20-8 against Quad 3 and 4 opponents. With a strength of schedule ranked No. 62 and three wins over Top 25 teams, they've built a solid—but not yet secure—tournament résumé.
The upcoming series against Coastal Carolina presents a key Quad 1 opportunity, which could be a game-changer for the Cajuns' postseason hopes. However, as a Sun Belt team, regional spots are tough to come by—only two teams from the conference made the tournament last season. Every win matters, especially in this final stretch.
This year also brings a new twist to the tournament selection process. For the first time, the NCAA committee will rank teams from No. 1 to No. 32, creating a more balanced bracket instead of the previous system of simply designating teams as No. 2 seeds in regional brackets. The top 16 seeds will be grouped into pods of four (1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16), while seeds 17-32 will be similarly grouped. The top four seeds will then be paired with teams from the 29-32 pod, ensuring competitive matchups from the start.
With everything on the line, Louisiana baseball fans have plenty to watch as the Cajuns look to finish strong and punch their ticket to the postseason. Whether you're cheering from the stands or repping your team's gear, this is the time to show your support.
