CBS Sports' post-spring top 25 ranking for Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers doesn't inspire a lot of confidence or hype.

As the spring practice period concludes across college football, national analysts are reshuffling their early top 25 rankings for the 2026 season—and Clemson finds itself in a position that's more about respect than raw excitement.

CBS Sports has placed the Tigers at No. 22 in their post-spring rankings, slotting them just behind the Washington Huskies and one spot ahead of the Florida Gators under new head coach Jon Sumrall. It's a notable climb from January, when Clemson didn't even crack veteran analyst Brandon Marcello's initial way-too-early top 25 following the College Football Playoff national championship.

But don't let the ranking fool you—Marcello's assessment suggests this nod is more about head coach Dabo Swinney's track record than the current roster's firepower. "This ranking is more a credit to Dabo Swinney's consistency rather than the talent on board," Marcello wrote. He pointed out that Swinney is sticking with familiar approaches rather than pushing boundaries, as redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina steps in as the starting quarterback and Chad Morris returns as offensive coordinator after a decade away. The defense dominated the spring game, with first-teamers recording nine sacks—though only two offensive starters were on the field. Defensive coordinator Tom Allen enters his second season calling plays.

For Tigers fans, the spotlight is firmly on Vizzina. The former four-star recruit from Briarwood Christian in Birmingham chose Clemson over Auburn, Arkansas, and others in the class of 2023. So far, he's thrown just 105 career passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. His lone start came last October in a 35-24 loss to SMU at Memorial Stadium, where he completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns—a glimpse of potential that Clemson hopes to build on.

Other outlets share a similarly cautious outlook. USA TODAY Sports placed Clemson at No. 24 in their post-spring rankings, while ESPN left the Tigers unranked in their latest update. For a program accustomed to national title contention, these rankings signal a season of proving ground rather than preseason hype.
