Team USA's Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk isn't wasting any time plotting a course for redemption. Speaking at Aronimink Golf Club ahead of the 2026 PGA Championship, Furyk laid out three key areas where the American squad must improve before the 2027 matches at Adare Manor in Ireland.
First on his list: a complete mindset overhaul. "It's not going to be easy — we have to scratch and claw," Furyk said, emphasizing the grit needed to win on foreign soil for the first time since 1993. He wants his players to embrace the underdog role and fight for every point, rather than relying solely on raw talent.
Second, Furyk stressed the need for a sustainable blueprint. "We need to create more continuity for our players and for our future captains," he explained. This means building a system that outlasts any single captain or roster, with clear strategies and shared philosophies that can be passed down through generations of American teams.
Third, and perhaps most critically, Furyk wants the Ryder Cup to become a year-round priority for American players. "We really need to start making the Ryder Cup more of a priority each and every year," he said, calling for a cultural shift that treats the event with the same reverence as the majors.
Furyk admitted he was "hoping he'd be approached" for the captaincy, and he's already taken action by naming Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink as his vice captains. With consecutive losses at Rome and Bethpage Black still fresh, the 2018 captain is determined to write a different story in 2027 — one built on preparation, passion, and purpose.
