In the high-stakes world of college basketball recruiting, securing a local talent over a bitter rival is a major victory. The Minnesota Gophers just scored exactly that, winning a head-to-head battle with the Wisconsin Badgers for Texas Tech transfer Nolan Groves.
The Long Lake, Minnesota native visited the Gophers on Wednesday with a trip to Madison planned later in the week. That visit to the Badgers never happened. After stepping foot on campus in Minneapolis, Groves was sold, canceling his Wisconsin plans and signing with the Gophers that same night.
Announcing his decision on social media, Groves becomes head coach Niko Medved's first transfer portal addition this spring, a significant early win for the program. "It was a no-brainer," Groves told the Pioneer Press. "I really love what that coaching staff has going. I think this thing is headed in the right direction, and I wanted to be a part of it."
Groves, a 6'5" wing, was a highly-touted three-star recruit out of Orono High School, even winning Minnesota's Gatorade Player of the Year award. After a brief commitment to Yale, he chose Texas Tech for his freshman season. The transition to the high-major level was a learning experience, as he went from a state tournament star averaging over 34 points per game to a reserve role on a Red Raiders team that reached the NCAA tournament's second round.
Reflecting on his year at Tech, Groves called it "a healthy slap in the face" that taught him what he needed to improve. He credits coach Grant McCasland with transforming his defense into a potential calling card, noting his newfound ability to guard multiple positions. He also dedicated himself to overhauling his shooting mechanics for a quicker, higher release.
Now, with three seasons of eligibility remaining, Groves returns home with a refined skillset and valuable Power 5 experience. His commitment is a statement for Coach Medved and the Gophers, signaling their intent to build a competitive roster by winning crucial recruiting battles right in their backyard.
