The cricketing world is buzzing with excitement as a brand-new T20 league prepares to make its debut on the European stage. Introducing the European T20 Premier League (ETPL)—a six-team franchise competition set to feature teams from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. And it's already attracting some of the biggest names in the sport.

In a move that has fans talking, the legendary "Universe Boss" Chris Gayle is stepping into a new role off the pitch. The former West Indies powerhouse and Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon will co-own a franchise in the league. But he's not the only cricket legend getting involved. Indian batting maestro Rahul Dravid has also joined the ownership group, becoming a co-owner of the Dublin Guardians franchise. Talk about a dream team behind the scenes!

The ETPL, first conceived back in 2019 by the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, had to be put on hold due to the pandemic. Fast forward to 2025, and the idea was revived with a fresh, privately funded model. Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan is a key stakeholder in the league, partnering with Rules Sport Tech, an Indian sports tech company.

Originally slated for summer 2025, the inaugural season has been rescheduled to 2026. But the groundwork is already impressive. Six franchises have been sold, each fetching a hefty INR 1,39,63,68,000 (approximately £11.1 million or $15 million).

One of the most intriguing teams is the Glasgow Mugafians, co-owned by Chris Gayle and the Mugafi Group, an India-based entertainment business. Gayle shared his excitement with BBC Sport, saying, "Stepping into the role of co-owner of Glasgow Mugafians marks an exciting new chapter for me. Europe represents cricket's final frontier, and the ETPL has the potential to unravel promising local talent and nurture future heroes who will strengthen the sport in that region. I can't wait to get started on this new journey."

With such star power—both on and off the field—the ETPL is shaping up to be a game-changer for cricket in Europe. Whether you're a fan of Dravid's classic elegance or Gayle's explosive power, this league promises to bring a fresh wave of energy to the sport. Stay tuned for more updates as the countdown to 2026 begins!
