Cam Young is absolutely on fire at the Cadillac Championship, and he's got a five-stroke lead heading into the weekend—but even he'll admit his game isn't always as clean as it looks.
Through two rounds at Trump National Doral, the 28-year-old New Yorker has posted a stunning 64 and 67, sitting at 13-under par. That's five shots clear of three players tied at eight-under, including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Young has been one of the PGA Tour's standout performers this year, and he's proving it again on the Blue Monster.
But it hasn't all been smooth sailing. During Friday's second round, Young hit what he thought was a terrible putt on the long par-3 13th hole. From 16 feet, he struck it poorly, walked toward the hole in frustration—and then watched in disbelief as the ball found the bottom of the cup.
"Yeah, I was absolutely disgusted about halfway there," Young admitted to reporters afterward. "I think my read netted out to be okay, but I just thought it was going to go a little bit left and then a little bit right... It got way left of where I thought it had a chance to go in and then just on a day like that when you're putting well, some of those they tend to wobble into the hole. And that one did."
It's that kind of magic that has the two-time PGA Tour winner dreaming of a third career title. But with a stacked field ready to chase him down, Young knows the weekend won't be easy. When asked about his strategy, he shared a simple but confident approach: "I think you have to stay aggressive. You can't just try to protect a lead out here."
Whether he's disgusted or delighted with his shots, Young is playing the kind of golf that turns heads—and wins tournaments. The Blue Monster might be tamed for now, but the real test begins Saturday.
