The Minnesota Wild are on the verge of a breakthrough. After falling behind 2-1 in the series, they’ve stormed back to take a 3-2 lead over the Dallas Stars, and now they’re just one win away from their first Western Conference Semifinals appearance since 2015.
Game 5 was a statement. The Wild went into Dallas and walked away with a 4-2 victory, proving they can win on the road under pressure. Now, they return to St. Paul with a chance to close out the series and punch their ticket to face the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche—arguably the toughest opponent in the NHL right now.
What’s been the key to Minnesota’s turnaround? Dominance at even strength. When both teams have five skaters on the ice, the Wild have outscored the Stars 11-3 in the series. In fact, Dallas hasn’t managed a single 5-on-5 goal in the last two games—a drought stretching over 217 minutes of play.
Injuries have played a role, too. The Wild are a different team with Mats Zuccarello in the lineup. After missing Games 2 through 4 with an upper-body injury, he returned for Game 5 and immediately made his presence felt, scoring the first goal of the night. On the other side, Stars forward Jason Robertson has been a consistent threat. He’s scored in every game of this series against Minnesota—and in eight of their nine meetings this season overall.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. A win on Thursday not only advances the Wild but sets up a marquee matchup against the Avalanche, a perennial Stanley Cup contender. For Minnesota, it’s a chance to end an 11-year playoff series drought. For Dallas, it’s do-or-die.
