After an eight-month battle back from a serious injury, Vasco da Gama's defensive midfielder Jair is finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel. The 28-year-old, who has been sidelined since suffering a devastating multiligament rupture in his right knee, is now in an optimistic phase as he eyes a return to the pitch for the Cruzmaltino.
The injury, which occurred less than two years after his previous knee setback, was a severe one—affecting the anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament, and menisci. Surgery involved reconstructing the cruciate ligament and adding extra-articular reinforcement for stability. But the club's medical staff is now celebrating what they call an "absolute success": no swelling in the knee, and a strong response to physical stimuli.
Jair took a major step forward earlier this month, returning to on-field training with the ball for the first time. His teammates greeted the moment with widespread celebration, a testament to his importance in the locker room. While Vasco is being cautious and hasn't set an official timeline for his full return, internal expectations point to him being cleared for unrestricted training after the World Cup break in the schedule.
Before the injury, Jair was enjoying a standout spell at São Januário, wearing the number 8 shirt with distinction. In recognition of his value, the club renewed his contract through the end of 2026, with an option for an additional year. So far, he has made 76 appearances and scored six goals for Vasco—a tally he'll look to build on when he's finally match-fit in the second half of the season.
For now, the focus remains on patience and progress. But for Vasco fans, the sight of Jair back in training is a welcome sign that their midfield general is closer than ever to returning to action.
