JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – It's been a bright week for Brady Gartner—both on the mound and on top of his head. After leading Westmont Hilltop to a commanding 7-0 shutout over United in the District 6 Class 2A playoffs at Sargent's Stadium at the Point, the right-handed pitcher earned a unique postgame prize: a bright yellow hardhat stamped with the school's athletic logo, a fitting reward for his stellar six-inning performance where he allowed just two hits and struck out six batters.
But the hardhat wasn't the only thing giving Gartner's scalp a new look. The entire Hilltoppers squad decided to go with bleached-blond hair as the postseason approached, turning a simple idea into a full team-bonding experience. "Anthony Oakley mentioned the blond hair, and we just went with it as a team thing," said Gartner, who also contributed at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. The transformation wasn't quick—"Three full days, six hours each day. It takes a while," he noted—but the commitment paid off in team spirit.
While the coaching staff hasn't adopted the new hairstyle, head coach Chris DelSignore is all in on the energy it brings. "A couple of seniors wanted to do it, and everyone bought in," DelSignore said. "Hey, whatever keeps them loose. They're a tight-knit group, and if it keeps things fun, that's what we're here for—to have fun and win." He added, "We've got a few more wins to rack up, but it's nice to get the first one."
On the field, the third-seeded Hilltoppers (12-7) started slow, leaving the bases loaded in the first inning before breaking through in the second. Landen Valente's flare into center field brought Gartner home for the first run. The momentum built in the third: Dom Chiodo's sacrifice fly scored Justin Ray, and Gartner followed with a double to plate Jack Wesner. Westmont Hilltop added another run in the fourth on Ray's sacrifice to left, scoring Sully Wier. Dom Byer and Wier each drove in runs in the fifth, and Wier later scored on a throwing error after Bryce Goodman's infield single.
For United (11-10), the hits were scarce but notable. Braden Butler singled with one out in the second, and Brendan James added another with two outs in the sixth. The Lions' hardest-hit ball came just before James' hit, when Dmitri Worthington lined out to first baseman Goodman. "Gartner did a really good job," United coach Doug McNulty said. "He was effective with three pitches, and we were up against it. It looked like he threw a bit of a cutter with his four-seam fastball, and our guys had trouble adjusting."
