In a game defined by defensive struggles, the Hayfield softball team couldn't overcome a flurry of miscues, falling to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (WEM) 10-5 on Monday.
The Vikings' usually steady defense unraveled, committing seven costly errors that turned what could have been a tight contest into a lopsided affair. Every single run scored by WEM came as unearned—a brutal stat line for pitcher Ella Bamlet, who battled through six innings despite having little help behind her.
Bamlet allowed just six hits and struck out four, but five walks and those seven defensive blunders proved too much to overcome. On the bright side, she made up for it at the plate, crushing a home run and driving in three runs to lead the Hayfield offense.
Kenna Rutledge also had a standout day, ripping a pair of doubles as part of a 2-for-4 performance that included an RBI and two runs scored. Jenna Christopherson chipped in with a double of her own, while Kalei Tank reached base via a walk and a single. June Schmeling and Adrian Dahle each added a hit, with Dahle crossing the plate once.
For a team that prides itself on fundamentals, this loss serves as a tough lesson: in softball, defense wins championships—and errors can turn even the best pitching performances into losses. Hayfield will look to clean things up before their next matchup.
