With the playoffs looming on the horizon, the intensity of Rhode Island high school sports reached a fever pitch on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Here's a breakdown of all the action from a thrilling day of competition.
Girls Lacrosse: La Salle Rebounds with Gritty Win Over Prout
Just a week after a tough loss to defending state champion Moses Brown, the La Salle girls lacrosse team showed their resilience in a big way. The Rams, determined not to let another close halftime lead slip away, came out firing in the second half to secure an 11-6 victory over Prout.
Nursing a narrow one-goal lead at the break, La Salle exploded for a dominant 12-minute stretch that turned the game in their favor. Goals came from all over the field as the Rams built a comfortable cushion, proving they learned from their previous matchup where they held Moses Brown to just two goals in the first half but couldn't maintain the pace.
With emotions running high on Senior Night, La Salle's defense was the story of the game. The Rams held Prout's offense in check while their own attack found its rhythm. Prout focused heavily on shutting down star player Lily Peters, but La Salle's offense proved too deep. Ellsie Freitas and Morgan Dube led the charge with three goals apiece, while Rhyse Smith and Brinley Freitas each added two. Goalkeeper Peyton Giroux was outstanding, making nine crucial saves to keep the Crusaders at bay.
The fourth quarter gave La Salle a chance to empty the bench, allowing backup goalie Sophie Owens to record her first career save—a moment that brought the home crowd to its feet.
For Prout, Lizzie Hill scored three goals and Miley Keramidas added one, but it wasn't enough to overcome La Salle's balanced attack.
What This Means for the Playoffs
With the win, La Salle improved to 8-5 on the season and solidified their hold on fourth place in the Division I RPI standings—a position that would guarantee a home playoff game in the quarterfinals. The Rams wrap up their regular season on Tuesday with a tough test against second-place East Greenwich.
Prout, now 7-7, sits in fifth place in the D-I RPI standings and appears poised to hold that spot heading into the postseason. The Crusaders have shown they can compete with anyone, but they'll need to find more offensive consistency to make a deep playoff run.
As the regular season winds down, every game carries playoff implications. Stay tuned for more high school sports action as Rhode Island's best athletes battle for postseason positioning.
