The countdown is on for one of the most anticipated clashes of the IPL season: Mumbai Indians versus Chennai Super Kings. But all eyes are on one man—Rohit Sharma. After missing four matches with a hamstring injury, the MI star was spotted batting in the nets in Chennai, sparking hope among fans. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene, however, is keeping expectations in check.
"It's progressed well. He's working really hard to get back," Jayawardene said. "But with the medical team, it's a daily assessment. We see how he feels, how he pulls up the next day. We'll make a decision after today's practice."
It's a cautious but promising update for a team that's been desperate for consistency. MI have won just two of their first eight matches, leaving them near the bottom of the table. With the playoff race heating up, every game is now a must-win.
"It's not the time for us to experiment," Jayawardene admitted. "We've had injuries and availability issues—we've already used 20 players this season. Normally, our maximum is 16. But these are quality players, and we need to trust the process."
One of MI's biggest challenges has been closing out games. Despite posting competitive totals, they've often lost momentum at critical moments. "We haven't been consistent enough in the phases where we must be competitive," Jayawardene explained. "It's a catch-22. We keep saying, 'let's get this done,' but sometimes you get pushed back."
For fans, the return of Rohit Sharma could be the spark MI need. Whether he takes the field at Chepauk or not, one thing is clear: every match from here on out is a battle for survival.
