“We Had a Lot of Uncertainty”: Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve Addresses Napheesa Collier Signing 1-Year Deal Instead of Long-Term Contract

Ever since she stepped into the WNBA, Napheesa Collier has been the face of the Minnesota Lynx. Through deep playoff runs, roster changes, injuries, and championship heartbreak, the Minnesota Lynx could always count on Phee to stay put.

When you think of the Minnesota Lynx, one name comes to mind: Napheesa Collier. Since her WNBA debut, Collier has been the heartbeat of the franchise—guiding the team through playoff battles, roster shake-ups, injuries, and even championship heartbreak. Through it all, "Phee" remained the dependable force fans could count on. But this offseason, a surprising decision has cast a shadow of uncertainty over that once-rock-solid foundation.

Head Coach Cheryl Reeve recently opened up about the behind-the-scenes drama that led to Collier signing a one-year, $1.4 million supermax deal instead of a long-term contract. And according to Reeve, the situation was far more complex than it appeared from the outside.

"Every player was different in terms of how they felt," Reeve explained, referencing the impact of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement on free agency across the league. "There was so much uncertainty about how everyone was going to feel when the CBA hit. Who was staying, who was going? There was so much chatter down at Unrivaled." The coach admitted that the Lynx organization itself was navigating uncharted waters, especially with Collier recovering from surgery on both ankles after a left ankle injury.

"We had a lot of uncertainty around our franchise because of Phee, and the injury, and maybe her not necessarily coming out and saying, 'I'm definitely here, I want to do this, and I'm going to be there for x number of years,'" Reeve added.

For the first time in years, the Lynx had to face the unsettling possibility that their franchise cornerstone was keeping her options open. Collier's one-year supermax deal—worth $1.4 million—certainly reflects her value on the court, but its short length has left fans questioning what the future holds.

Still, Reeve emphasized that this wasn't about Collier wanting out of Minnesota. Instead, she framed it as a strategic move tied to the league's evolving financial landscape. "That's Phee's journey, that's her free agency journey and how she viewed it," Reeve continued. "She wanted to see what was out there, and we respect that."

For Lynx fans, the message is clear: while Collier remains committed for now, the era of absolute certainty in Minnesota might be shifting. As the WNBA's financial dynamics continue to evolve, so too will the decisions of its biggest stars.
