The Worthington Community Football Club is charging into its fifth year with a clear mission: finish the job. After a heartbreaking end to a dominant 2023 campaign, the Toros are back, deeper and more determined than ever to claim the UPSL championship that narrowly eluded them.
Last season was a landmark one for WCFC, posting an undefeated 8-0-2 regular season record and hosting their first-ever playoff game. The dream, however, ended in a 2-1 loss to rivals Omaha Street Futbol Club in the division championship—a result that has fueled the fire for 2024.
That fire is already burning bright. The Toros opened their new campaign with a statement 5-0 victory over Bana Mboka FC, powered by a four-goal performance from Velasquez. The team now looks ahead to its home opener this Saturday against Super Stars FC, the first of five crucial home matches this season.
A key to their championship aspirations lies in their expanded and diverse roster, which blends local talent with national and international experience. Among the vital returning pieces is English center back Harry Twinn, who brings a seasoned perspective from the soccer-rich culture of Newcastle.
Now playing college soccer in Iowa, Twinn has become a vocal leader and believer in the Toros' potential. "The biggest thing for the team that drives everyone is that everyone just falls in love with the club," Twinn said. "That's why everyone fights so hard for it... The only outcome this season for us is we win the conference, we win the playoffs, and we go to nationals."
Twinn's journey highlights the unique blend of styles within the squad. Having grown up in England's rigorous soccer system, he notes the distinct American approach to the game. "Everyone plays a different way... But when you all come together under one tactical view, everyone can put their own spin on it, which is really good," he explained. This fusion of international experience and local passion is what makes WCFC a formidable and exciting team to watch.
With a perfect start, a fortified roster, and a unified hunger for redemption, the Toros are not just hoping for a title—they are building towards it, one match at a time.
