In a thrilling display of attacking football, Aston Villa secured a resounding 4-2 victory over Liverpool at Villa Park on Friday, booking their place in next season's Champions League and building impressive momentum ahead of their Europa League final clash with Freiburg.
Ollie Watkins was the star of the show, scoring twice and having another goal disallowed, as Unai Emery's men delivered a performance full of style and substance. The win guarantees Villa a top-five finish in the Premier League, capping a remarkable season for the Birmingham club just days before they face Freiburg in the Europa League final on May 20.
Liverpool, meanwhile, remain in fifth place, three points behind Villa, and face an anxious wait to see if they will qualify for next year's Champions League.
The match started with Liverpool looking sharp, as Cody Gakpo had a goal ruled out for offside and Emiliano Martinez produced a fine save to deny Dominik Szoboszlai's swerving long-range effort. But Villa gradually found their rhythm and took the lead three minutes before halftime through Morgan Rogers, who placed a perfect right-foot shot past Giorgi Mamardashvili following a well-worked corner.
Virgil van Dijk's header eight minutes into the second half brought Liverpool level, but Villa responded with authority. Watkins had a goal chalked off for offside but quickly made amends, capitalizing on a Szoboszlai slip to race through on the counterattack and restore Villa's lead. He then added a third in the 73rd minute, side-footing home from close range after Mamardashvili made two excellent saves.
Watkins's double takes his tally to six goals in his last seven league appearances, underlining his red-hot form as Villa approach the Europa League final. His relentless movement and sharp finishing proved too much for a Liverpool defense that looked vulnerable every time Villa surged forward.
Emiliano Buendía rattled the crossbar with a long-range effort, and Rio Ngumoha did the same for Liverpool at the other end, before John McGinn sealed the win two minutes from time with a superbly placed shot into the far corner. Van Dijk added a late header in stoppage time to make it 4-2, but it was little more than consolation for a Liverpool side that appeared tired and sluggish.
With Villa's final league game of the season now behind them, all eyes turn to the Europa League final against Freiburg. Liverpool, meanwhile, travel to Brentford on May 24 for their season finale, knowing that only a win and some favorable results elsewhere will keep their Champions League hopes alive.
