Washington men's basketball coach Danny Sprinkle is still working to fill out his 2026-27 roster, and a familiar face from the local college scene could be on his radar. Former Seattle University center Austin Maurer has reportedly been in contact with the Huskies' coaching staff, according to Transfer Tapes, as Sprinkle looks to add depth to his frontcourt.
Maurer, a 7-foot, 230-pound native of Medford, Oregon, entered the transfer portal last month and has drawn interest from a host of programs. Along with Washington, Arizona State, Northwestern, Rice, San Diego State, San Francisco, Syracuse, UNLV, and Xavier have all reached out to the 2023-24 Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year.
After beginning his college career at Grand Canyon, Maurer transferred to Seattle U for the 2025-26 season, where he made an immediate impact. Starting 25 of 35 games, the big man averaged 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, helping the Redhawks post a 21-14 record. Sprinkle got a firsthand look at Maurer's potential back in December, when the sophomore dropped a career-high 19 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and added 3 blocks in 28 minutes to lead Seattle U to a 70-66 win over Washington at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Huskies are in need of frontcourt reinforcements. Currently, only junior reserve Lathan Sommerville is locked in as a true center for next season, with forwards Nikola Dzepina (sophomore) and Mady Traore (senior) also returning. Sprinkle is targeting at least two more players to fill the power forward and center spots, including newly signed Brazilian 6-foot-9 forward Wíni Braga.
There's also ongoing speculation about the return of former Washington and Oregon center Franck Kepnang for a seventh season, but nothing has been confirmed. As that situation remains uncertain, the Huskies' coaching staff continues to explore other options to bolster their frontcourt ahead of Sprinkle's third season in Seattle.
