The Washington Huskies men's basketball program has secured its first key piece for the future, as junior center Lathan Sommerville has officially re-signed for the 2026-27 season. This move signals stability for head coach Danny Sprinkle as he builds his roster for the upcoming campaign.

Sommerville, a 6-foot-10 transfer from Rutgers, was Sprinkle's first portal commitment last April. After a debut season where he served as a backup and navigated a knee injury, appearing in 22 games with seven starts, he is now poised for a significantly expanded role. With starter Franck Kepnang transferring out, the lane is clear for Sommerville to step up.

His potential is evident in his efficient shooting; he connected on 43.8% from the floor last year, the fifth-best mark on the team. While his rebounding average was 2.6 per game, expect those numbers to climb as his minutes and responsibilities increase. He brings a reliable interior presence that will be crucial for the Huskies' frontcourt.

Sommerville joins Nikola Dzepina and Mady Traore as returning frontcourt players, giving Coach Sprinkle a core to build around. However, the roster construction is far from complete. The Huskies have been active in the transfer portal, adding guards Parker Friedrichsen and Steele Venters, and await the return of guard Wesley Yates III.

With eight scholarship spots still open, Sprinkle is expected to aggressively target additional post players to bolster the lineup. Sommerville's early commitment provides a solid foundation for that recruitment push, marking an important first step in assembling a competitive team for the 2026-27 season.
