The Washington Huskies came agonizingly close to pulling off a major upset against their arch-rivals, the No. 13 Oregon Ducks, on Friday night at Husky Ballpark. But in a game that had all the makings of a classic, it was a devastating eighth inning that turned triumph into heartbreak, as the Ducks rallied for a 6-4 victory.
For most of the evening, it looked like Washington had the upper hand. Starter Jackson Thomas delivered a gritty performance, tossing six innings of two-run ball—both unearned—while scattering just two hits, walking one, and striking out three. The Huskies carried a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning, and the crowd was buzzing with anticipation of a statement win.
Then came the collapse. Oregon catcher Burk-lee Mabeus stepped to the plate and launched a three-run homer that flipped the script, giving the Ducks a 5-4 lead. As if that wasn't enough, designated hitter Naulivou Lauaki Jr., who finished 3-for-4 on the day, followed with a solo shot of his own, putting the game out of reach. Reliever Tommy Brandenburg took the loss after recording just two outs, surrendering four runs on three hits and a walk in the eighth.
Washington's offense had started strong, building an early lead with some patient at-bats. Third baseman Blake Wilson ripped a bases-loaded double into the left-center gap, scoring three runs to put the Huskies up 3-1 in the first inning. Shortstop Sam DeCarlo then drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to extend the lead to 4-1, giving the home side plenty of momentum.
Oregon starter Will Sanford struggled with command, lasting just 3 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on three hits, five walks, and five strikeouts. But the Ducks' bullpen steadied the ship, with Gabe Howard earning the win after a scoreless seventh inning. Closer Tanner Bradley then locked it down, working the final two frames for his first save of the season, striking out two and walking one.
The loss drops Washington to 20-25 overall and 9-13 in Big Ten play. But there's no time to dwell on the disappointment—the two teams will meet again Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. PT at Husky Ballpark, with the Huskies looking to even the series.
