The Washington Huskies fell behind early and couldn't muster a comeback in a 6-4 loss to the Michigan State Spartans on Friday.

The Washington Huskies' series opener against Michigan State got off to a tough start, as an early deficit proved too much to overcome in a 6-4 loss at Husky Ballpark on Friday night.

Ace starter Noah Kenney delivered a gritty, career-long 8 1/3 innings, but a pair of costly home runs put the Huskies behind. Michigan State's designated hitter Noah Bright connected for a two-run shot in the third, and right fielder Picot Parker added a solo blast in the fifth, part of a dominant 3-for-4, two-RBI night for the Spartan batter.

Washington's offense flickered to life in the middle innings. Shortstop Sam DeCarlo cut into the lead with his fifth homer of the year in the fifth, and the Huskies mounted a serious threat in the seventh, plating three runs—two on bases-loaded walks—to pull within one. The comeback bid, however, was ultimately stifled by Spartan reliever Nolan Higgins, who was electric over the final 2 1/3 innings, racking up five strikeouts to secure the win.

Despite the loss, there was a bright spot in the lineup for the Huskies. Ty Cowan continued his strong season at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored, proving a tough out all night for the Michigan State pitching staff.

With the defeat, Washington moves to 16-21 overall and will look to even the three-game series on Saturday night. First pitch back at Husky Ballpark is set for 7:00 p.m. PT.
