The Golden State Warriors just caught a major break in their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo—and it’s all thanks to upcoming changes to the NBA Draft lottery rules.

Here’s the scoop: The league is planning to flatten the odds for the worst teams, making the lottery much more balanced. Instead of the bottom-feeders having a near-lock on the top pick, every team that misses the playoffs will have a much more even shot at landing in the top spots. That means draft picks from mediocre teams are about to become way more valuable.

For the Warriors, this is huge. While most teams chasing Giannis are young and built to contend for years, Golden State’s core is aging. Even if they land the Greek Freak, their championship window might only be a few more seasons. After that, their future first-round picks could easily fall into the lottery—and under the new rules, those mid-tier picks will carry serious weight.

Compare that to a team like Boston, whose picks are almost guaranteed to land in the late 20s for the foreseeable future. The Bucks, if they decide to trade Giannis, will want as many first-round picks and swaps as possible from teams that aren’t locks to dominate. The Warriors’ older roster makes those future picks look much more enticing.

Of course, there’s a catch. Industry insider Marc Stein notes that these rule changes might actually slow down draft pick trading in the short term, as teams try to figure out the new landscape. But if Giannis gets moved this summer, Milwaukee won’t have the luxury of waiting—and betting on picks from a team that looks poised to decline could be their smartest play.
