Walsall have made a major statement of intent by appointing former Huddersfield Town boss Lee Grant as their new head coach. The 43-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium, taking over from interim manager Darren Byfield.
Byfield, a former Saddlers striker, had been handed the reins until the end of the season following the dismissal of Mat Sadler in March. While he steadied the ship, the club ultimately finished 13th in League Two—a far cry from their Christmas Day position at the top of the table, a 13-point gap from the play-offs highlighting a dramatic second-half collapse.
Grant arrives with a point to prove after a turbulent spell at Huddersfield. He was sacked in January despite the Terriers sitting sixth in League One at the time, having taken charge just eight months into a three-year contract. Prior to that, he spent three years on the coaching staff at Ipswich Town, helping develop a side known for its attacking flair.
"I'm super delighted and proud to be the new head coach," Grant said. "The teams I've been involved in have scored lots of goals, and there's been a strong focus on player development. My ideas around that are clear. It's going to be a busy period for myself and the club, but I'm really excited to get going, help the football club progress, and I very much look forward to getting to work."
For Walsall fans, this appointment signals a fresh start and a clear vision for the future. Grant's track record of developing talent and building free-scoring sides could be just what the Saddlers need to turn their mid-table finish into a promotion push next season. As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on how quickly he can implement his philosophy and reshape the squad. One thing's for sure: the new boss isn't short on ambition.
