St. Louis outfielder Jordan Walker hit his MLB-leading eighth homer of the season Monday night, and his season-opening power display has placed him among some of the Cardinals' greats. With the homer in the 9-3 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, Walker became the fifth player in Cardinals history to hit at least eight homers in the first 16 games of a season, joining St. Louis standouts Stan Musial (1954), Mark McGwire (1998), Scott Rolen (2004) and Albert Pujols (2006).

Jordan Walker is making history look easy. On Monday night, the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder launched his MLB-leading eighth home run of the season, a 398-foot solo shot in a 9-3 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. While the team result wasn't ideal, Walker's individual achievement was monumental, etching his name alongside the franchise's most legendary sluggers.

With that blast, Walker became just the fifth player in Cardinals history to hit at least eight homers in the first 16 games of a season. The company he now keeps is nothing short of iconic: Stan Musial (1954), Mark McGwire (1998), Scott Rolen (2004), and Albert Pujols (2006). For a 23-year-old, that's elite territory. "It means a lot, man," Walker said. "Those are the greats... to be put with them is pretty special."

Walker's power surge is a story of rapid development and locked-in preparation. He has homered in three consecutive games and in seven of his last nine, a feat last accomplished by a Cardinal when Paul Goldschmidt did it in 2022. This explosive start is even more impressive considering his previous power output; the 2020 first-round pick had just 11 total home runs over 527 at-bats in the 2022 and 2023 seasons combined.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol credits Walker's calm, prepared approach at the plate for the breakout. "Just the work and the preparation is key... You can just see the calmness when he's taking his at bats," Marmol noted. Walker's historic pace also puts him in a unique club with Albert Pujols as the only Cardinals to hit eight or more homers in March/April before turning 24 years old.

For Cardinals fans and baseball enthusiasts, Walker's start is a thrilling glimpse of a new power threat emerging in St. Louis, carrying the torch from the all-time greats who came before him.
